With four years of required English classes there's no need to worry about variety with options like literary madness, haunting, short story and invisible cities.

The study of history is an essential part of the School’s comprehensive program. To deepen the students’ understanding of the world past and present as well as to build and refine their skills in service of historical inquiry and analysis, the History department offers a four-year curriculum of core courses and electives.

The study of a foreign language provides the opportunity for students to gain new perspective on their native cultures and languages. UHS offers French, Spanish and Latin.

These courses emphasize modes of mathematical reasoning and techniques of problem solving through the traditional topics of algebra, geometry, and right-triangle trigonometry. Students who wish to continue their study of mathematics have a variety of electives to choose from: pre-calculus, single and multi-variable calculus, statistics, and chaos theory.

University High School requires that each student complete two years of science for graduation. Though here, it is believed that it is best to have a foundation in all three fundamental sciences; physics, chemistry, and biology.

The Dennis A. Collins Library at University High School provides students with the resources to become competent, confident researchers. With over 15,000 items in the school's collection, students can find information on a wide range of topics.

A bit of outside space, one can be found in each of the high school's four campuses. There are benches, trees and some flowering plants to make the area brighter.

Alcatraz Island, also known as 'The Rock', history includes serving as a military fortification in the 1850’s, an incarceration facility for Spanish-American War prisoners, and a federal maximum-security prison from 1934 to 1963. Now it's open to the public for daily tours of the prison and once and a while major events are held there.

An easily recognized landmark, visible from many areas of the city, Coit Tower has great views of, and can be seen from, Alcatraz Island, Pier 39, Fisherman's Wharf, the Golden Gate Bridge, the Financial District and other parts of San Francisco.

The Castro district in San Francisco is known for its sizable gay and lesbian population, its historic Castro Theatre, and its rows of restored Victorian homes. Always a popular place for outlandish parties and a symbol for gay rights in district form.

San Francisco’s oldest street—Grant Avenue—runs eight blocks through the center of America’s ethnic capital to over 1.5 million people of Chinese descent. Be sure to stop by one of the countless shops or slip inside for a bite to eat at one of the authentic restaurants.

San Francisco’s downtown waterfront area is centered on the Ferry Building. Recently transformed with the removal of the elevated Embarcadero Freeway the area is home to many popular restaurants and hotels with plazas, walks, parks, and public pier access, which give visitors and residents the chance to enjoy the spectacular waterfront setting.

Golden Gate Park, San Francisco's largest, is bigger than New York’s Central Park. The park has over one million trees, nine lakes, and a lily pond within its borders. Strybing Arboretum and Botanical Garden, the Conservatory of Flowers as well as the Japanese Tea Garden are also found here.

San Francisco’s North Beach neighborhood, also known as Little Italy, is situated between Chinatown and Fisherman's Wharf with Telegraph Hill and Coit Tower on the east and Russian hill on the west. The North Beach Neighborhood's Italian heritage is expressed in the many check-cloth cafes, restaurants, bakeries and Old World delicatessens serving such traditional Italian foods such as prosciutto, provolone and mozzarella.

The South of Market district (SoMa) is becoming San Francisco’s center of art and nightlife with a broad selection of museums, galleries, restaurants, cafes, bars and nightclubs.
