The study of history is an essential part of the School’s comprehensive program. To deepen the students’ understanding of the world past and present as well as to build and refine their skills in service of historical inquiry and analysis, the History department offers a four-year curriculum of core courses and electives.

The study of a foreign language provides the opportunity for students to gain new perspective on their native cultures and languages. UHS offers French, Spanish and Latin.

These courses emphasize modes of mathematical reasoning and techniques of problem solving through the traditional topics of algebra, geometry, and right-triangle trigonometry. Students who wish to continue their study of mathematics have a variety of electives to choose from: pre-calculus, single and multi-variable calculus, statistics, and chaos theory.

Alcatraz Island, also known as 'The Rock', history includes serving as a military fortification in the 1850’s, an incarceration facility for Spanish-American War prisoners, and a federal maximum-security prison from 1934 to 1963. Now it's open to the public for daily tours of the prison and once and a while major events are held there.
